National Apprenticeship Week 2024: Lucy Stephens

Tell me about your journey into construction. Where did you start and where are you now?

I dropped out of college after 2 semesters because I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I didn’t want school debt. I had to pick a career path so I looked up apprenticeship programs and applied. I started as a CW 2 weeks after my apprenticeship interview and got my apprenticeship 6 months after that. I’m a 4th year currently and I top out as a journeyman in May.

How did you get interested in a career in construction?

I grew up building things with my dad and I couldn’t justify going back to college when I didn’t have a plan.

What’s the best part of your job?

Doing different things every day and getting to know everyone I work with. And doing underground. I love doing underground.

Biggest takeaway from your apprenticeship?

Getting started in a career I love has been the biggest takeaway from my apprenticeship.

How long have you been with WCO?

I’ve been with Westphal for 4 years this month.

What advice do you have for someone looking for a career in the trades?

Be excited to learn and be someone that you’d want to work with.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your career so far?

Having to figure out a way to do things that works for me since I’m pretty short.

Where are you looking to go from here?

I’m looking forward to getting more responsibility as my career progresses.
