This project consisted of the construction of a new 1,500MW gas-fired generating plant on a greenfield site, in the heart of the UW Campus. Also included were electrically driven chillers that provide 20,000 tons of chilled water to the university, and the excess steam from the generation cycle generates 500,000 lbs/hr of steam to heat the UW Campus. 

Westphal & Co. performed all electrical work associated with the construction of two dual-fuel combustion turbine generators, one steam turbine generator, and four 5,000 ton electric chillers. The project included underground electric utilities, medium voltage power, line voltage power, lighting, fire alarm, voice/data and associated systems, control and instrumentation, grounding, and cathodic protection.

Westphal & Co. performed all electrical work for this 245MW combined cycle, natural gas generating plant on a greenfield site. The project consisted of two dual-fuel combustion turbine generators and a steam turbine generator. The excess steam is routed through a pipeline to an adjacent University of Wisconsin System campus. The project included medium voltage power, underground utilities, DCS system, instrumentation and control, lighting, paging, line voltage power, fire alarm, voice/data and associated systems, grounding, and cathodic protection.

Westphal & Co., Inc. installed approximately 80,000 feet of underground conduit, including 24-pack, 36-pack, and 72-pack conduit duct banks encased in concrete. Grounding, lightning protection, and sleeving was included in the scope of work.

Westphal & Co., Inc. started a joint venture with BVCI to perform all electrical construction services for this new air quality control system (AQCS). The AQCS is a dry scrubber facility designed to reduce emissions at the coal-fired electrical generating facility. Work included the installation of all cable tray and conduit, power feeders and branch circuiting, medium- and line-voltage switchgear, auxiliary transformers and transmission line, multi-segmented bus duct, lighting, instrumentation, distributed control system, and low voltage systems.

In addition to the standard lighting and power installation, our work included theatrical lighting and controls along with many aquarium and special animal equipment installations. Emergency power and landscape lighting were included. Power for a hydraulic pump to rotate an early 1900s dredge paddlewheel was included.

Six large aquariums and many exhibits feature giant catfish, turtles, otters, ducks, frogs, reptiles and the history of America’s most famous river, the Mississippi River. Interactive exhibits and living history demonstrations bring this exciting river-front campus in Dubuque, Iowa, to life.

Provided the electrical, telecommunications, and security installation for the 56,400 square-foot, multi-story above grade addition with full basement below. The new facility will house local, state, and federal inmates and has an isolated block for juvenile offenders.

The scope of work included a new electric service to serve both the existing and new facility; a 500KW diesel generator; power, lighting, voice, data, and sound, central institutional monitoring, closed circuit TV, security card access, and control center video graphics, fire alarm, and associated systems.

The Grand River Center is an 860,000 square-foot municipal convention center in the Port of Dubuque on the Mississippi River. The GRC is an icon building featuring beautiful river views, large pre-function and patio space overlooking the Mississippi River, as well as large flexible meeting and banquet space. Our work included all power and lighting, a complex Lutron dimming system, and full fire alarm system. Work also included emergency power, standby generating capability, as well as site and landscape lighting.

In this 24,268 square-foot addition you will find a vehicle sally port and a jail booking department. The inmate patient care unit was improved during the remodeling of 6,330 square-feet of existing facility. Video surveillance cameras, security electronics, and fire alarm systems were upgraded in the existing facility that has the capacity to hold 525 inmates. The scope of work included underground utilities, power distribution, parking and service road lighting, egress and interior lighting, emergency generator modifications, and low voltage, fiber optic voice/data systems.
